We recently had the pleasure of interviewing Ginger Lapid-Bogda, the author, and Caren Stumpf, the illustrator, of “The Enneagram Coloring Book.” While the two are based in Santa Monica, CA, we were lucky to catch Ginger between business trips and speaking engagements. This was not your typical Adult Coloring Book author/illustrator duo, but we were able to get them to share a few words with everyone here.
And after all, we had to know what an Enneagram was.
They sent us a copy and the pictures are beautiful. Want to see for yourself, check out the interview below and the amazing images along the way.
ACG: Where are you located?
Santa Monica, CA
ACG: When did you start drawing and doing art?
Caren: I started painting and making artwork since I was a kid. Mostly doing crafty type of art. I was never great at drawing by hand, but have been able to work in Adobe programs to make art. Some of the artwork for this coloring book is public domain and some are original creations. The most important part was being able to convey a message about the Enneagram through images.
ACG: What the heck is an Enneagram?
Ginger: The Enneagram is an ancient psychological and spiritual system – 2000 to 4000 years old – with origins in the area where the Tigres meets the Euphrates River. It is powerful, profound, and has experienced a modern emergence in the second half of the 20th century and even more in the first couple of decades in the 21st century.
ACG: And why should people check it out?
Ginger: The Enneagram can be used in a wide variety of applications: personal development; transformative work; work place applications such as communication, teams, leadership, conflict, parenting and teaching styles, just to name a few.
Caren: Any chance to learn more about yourself through a fun and relaxing activity is a winner in my eyes.
ACG: What made you decide to get into publishing your own adult coloring book?
Caren: I am into adult coloring books and randomly asked if we could create a coloring book. I remember Ginger saying that she had the same exact idea, but she really honed into wanting to make the Enneagram accessible to everyone. A coloring book that could teach individuals what the Enneagram is, even if the person never heard of it as well as enhances knowledge of individuals who already know the Enneagram.
Ginger: Most people learn the Enneagram from books written in a linear form or through workshops, which can be lecture, activity based or a combination of the two. The Enneagram Coloring Book allows people to learn the Enneagram system and identify their type through using their right-brain as well as their left-brain, and using their thinking, feeling and kinesthetic abilities. It’s a holistic way of learning.
ACG: How have you seen Adult Coloring impact the work that you do?
Ginger: I have become aware many (closet) colorers in the Enneagram community who use coloring for artistic expression, relaxation, and fun. I have also noticed many people do not know the Enneagram learn it and identify their types through The Enneagram Coloring Book. It has definitely impacted the way I teach, being more aware of using multi-modal approaches to teaching and learning.
ACG: What is your hope for the future of adult coloring?
Ginger: It seems to be more than a trend, which is very exciting. For some people it takes them back to childhood and a great deal of joy. For others, it takes them to a place of spontaneous expression, where there is not right or wrong. You don’t have to color inside the lines!
Caren: I would love to see more expansion of businesses making coloring books to teach through images for visual people such as myself.
